α-Enolase is a multifunctional enzyme; it is a neutrophin, a heat-shock protein, and a glycolytic catalyst. α-Enolase is also an autoantigen and stimulates immunoglobulin production. The production of antibodies against the citrullinated form of α-enolase (whereby positive Arg residues are converted into citrulline) is a hallmark of rheumatoid arthritis. α-Enolase also functions in the fibrolytic system, as a plasminogen receptor, and binds Myc to repress c-myc.
