Grip71 was first identified in Drosophila and named Drosophila gamma ring protein with WD repeats (Dgp71WD). It is a component of the γ-tubulin ring complex (γ-TuRC) and is a homologue of the mammalian NEDD1 (alternatively named GCP-WD). Despite the name, Grip71 lacks Grip domains and instead contains N-terminal WD40 repeats and a C-terminal domain with unknown structure required for Grip71’s association with the γ-TuRC. Grip71 recruits γ-TuRC to different microtubule organising centres (MTOCs).
Grip71 is recruited to the spindle equator and poles by Augmin. In mitotic cells, a loss of Grip71 or Augmin leads to a dramatic decrease in the spindle microtubule density
