Data Sheet Data Sheet Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family comprises of VEGF-A, VEGF-B, VEGF-C, VEGF-D and placenta growth factor (PGF). This family of signal proteins are produced by a range of cells to stimulate the formation of blood vessels.
The biological functions of Vegfb are still relatively enigmatic; although not essential in inducing blood vessel growth, Vegfb appears to be critical in blood vessel survival. Vegfb treatment has been shown to protect endangered neurons from apoptosis without the need to induce undesired blood vessel growth or permeability. It is an important survival factor in a many cells; through inhibiting apoptotic genes and preventing cell death. Under certain conditions, Vegfb can act to inhibit tumour growth and promote angiogenesis.
Vegfb does not appear to have a direct involvement in angiogenesis, but rather an indirect role in vascular growth through effect on Vegfa action. Vegfb has also been shown to change gene expression of proteins involved in cardiac metabolism, promoting cell survival.
