Interleukin-11 (IL-11) is a multifunctional haematopoietic cytokine implicated in several normal and pathological processes. It belongs to the interleukin-6 (IL-6) family of cytokines, which affect intracellular signalling pathways via interaction with the ubiquitously expressed signal-transducing receptor, gp130 and a non-signalling cytokine-specific receptor.
IL-11 is expressed in hepatocytes, B cells, macrophages and osteoclasts and it activates JAK/STAT and MAPK signalling pathways, exerting in some cases drastically different physiological effects. IL-11 favours oncogenesis in numerous overlapping cancer types such as gastrointestinal cancers, breast cancer and osteosarcoma. IL-11 has growth factor activity, immunological activity and plays a role in female fertility control. IL-11 is under investigation for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and other inflammatory conditions.
